The Anglica Tower
During the 9th century, this rocky promontory was the setting of a first fortified castle belonging to the archbishops of Arles.
Barbentane was then given as a fief to the bishops of Avignon during the 12th century . One of them, Anglic de Grimoard, brother to Pope Urbain V, had this tower (28 metres high) built in 1365. He also had a castle erected on the eastern side of the tower.
An archbishop of Avignon, Dominique de Marinis, had it entirely rebuilt in 1665. At the end of the 18th century, the famous cartographer Cassini and his team took advantage of the dominant position of the Tower to make some precious spotting.
In 1793, the whole set was sold as a « state-owned property ». Only the Tower survived the French Revolution. The Tower was bought in 1852 by the marquis de Robin de Barbentane and still belongs nowadays to his descendants.
